Your budget stays on your device
Kestral Budget is built so your financial data never has to leave your computer. Here is exactly what that means.
Where your data lives
- Desktop app (Windows, macOS): your budgets are stored in a database on your computer.
- Self-hosted: your budgets are stored in the database volume you configure on your own machine or server.
Kestral Budget does not send your budget data to the developer or to any cloud service.
What Kestral Budget does not have
- No accounts or sign-in
- No bank connections or bank login
- No cloud sync
- No subscription or paid tier
- No automatic backups. Export a backup yourself and keep copies of anything important.
The fine print
- Fonts: the app loads its typefaces from Google Fonts when you are online, so your browser or the desktop app makes a font request to Google. That request does not include your budget data.
- This website: the download page asks GitHub for the latest release number, and the Ko-fi button loads an image from Ko-fi. The site does not use analytics or advertising trackers.
- Self-hosting: the app has no login, so keep a self-hosted copy on a network you trust.
Open source
The full source code is public on GitHub under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later, so you can check how it works yourself.
